What information does XMG need to help me decide which desktop PC to buy?

The following points will help us to quickly narrow down your requirements:

1. Intended use

What will the PC mainly be used for?

Should it be a gaming PC, a system for Content Creation, CAD, software development, AI workloads, or simply a powerful all-round PC for everyday use? Depending on the intended use, priorities regarding the CPU, graphics card, RAM and storage vary significantly.

It is helpful to specify the most important programs or typical tasks directly. The more we know about your use case, the better we can narrow down our recommendations.

2. Gaming: Which games at what resolution?

If the PC is intended for gaming, please share some of the following details:

  • Which games will be played mainly?
  • Competitive multiplayer games, older games or the latest AAA games?
  • What level of graphics quality is expected? Do high or maximum detail settings need to be achieved?
  • What resolution and refresh rate does the existing monitor have?

Monitor resolution is also crucial. A gaming PC for Full HD at 60 Hz has very different requirements to a system for WQHD or 4K with a high refresh rate.

3. Workstation performance

Even outside of gaming, it is important to know whether the intended use is more CPU-intensive, GPU-intensive or memory-intensive.

Examples:

  • CPU-intensive: code compilation, video encoding, simulations
  • GPU-intensive: rendering, AI applications, certain visualisation workloads
  • memory-intensive: large projects, virtual machines, professional content workflows

A brief list of your most important programs is also helpful here. If you already know that a specific CPU class, a specific amount of RAM (system memory) or VRAM (video memory) is required, please let us know.

4. Budget

What is your budget range?

A realistic budget helps us make suitable recommendations without overshooting your requirements. It often makes sense to set priorities: in many cases, it's better to invest in the CPU or GPU first and take a more conservative approach to SSD expansion, as storage is usually easier to upgrade later than the core platform.

If the budget is also intended to cover a monitor, peripherals and operating system license, please let us know the details.

5. Size and form factor

Not everyone wants a large tower under their desk. Some prefer a compact system with a small footprint, whilst others want as many expansion options as possible, large coolers and maximum upgradeability.

Questions such as the following are therefore helpful:

  • Should the system be as compact as possible?
  • Is a particularly large amount of space required for future drives or expansion cards?
  • Is noise level more important than maximum compactness?

6. Design and appearance

What should the PC look like?

The chassis also plays a role in the selection. Some prefer a striking gaming design with a glass panel and lighting, whilst others want a system that is as simple and unobtrusive as possible, without RGB or visual gimmicks.

It is therefore helpful to specify early on:

  • rather simple and understated
  • rather striking and high-performance looking
  • with or without a glass panel
  • with or without lighting

Such preferences already filter out some of the suitable systems.

7. Components already decided

Are there any components that have already been decided?

If you already know exactly which CPU or graphics card you want, please let us know. This simplifies the selection considerably, as it means some systems are immediately eligible or ruled out.

This applies, for example, to:

  • a specific NVIDIA or AMD graphics card
  • a specific processor platform
  • minimum RAM size
  • specific requirements for Wi-Fi, network connectivity or add-on cards

8. Upgradeability and future planning

If you already know that you will need to add more SSD storage, more RAM or possibly a more powerful graphics card at a later date, you should take this into account when making your choice. Not every chassis and not every platform offers the same reserves in terms of space, cooling and AC adapter.

A good purchasing decision therefore takes into account not only current needs but also planned developments over the next few years.
