What information does XMG need to help me make an informed laptop purchase decision?

When considering a laptop purchase, it is essential to understand your needs and how the device will be used. Here is a list of considerations that will help guide you towards a well-informed buying decision:

1. Gaming Performance

  • Will you use the laptop for gaming? If so, what type of games do you play? Retro games, multiplayer or the very latest single-player titles?
  • When in doubt, list a few of the games you intent to play most often.
  • If you play the latest games, are you comfortable with adjusting the settings, or do you prefer playing at max settings?
  • Do you intend to play at very high resolutions, such as on an external 4K monitor?

2. Non-Gaming Performance

  • Is your use-case more CPU or GPU-heavy? If GPU-heavy, how important is the size of video memory to you? For example, AI training requires very large video memory spaces.
  • If CPU-heavy, are your workloads primarily all-core loads such as video encoding or tile rendering? If they are not all-core heavy, you might prefer to use a more lean, efficient CPU with potentially equally high single-core performance.
  • If the laptop is not used for gaming, do you even need a dedicated GPU? Content creation with Adobe Photoshop and Premiere Pro work very well on modern integrated graphics units.
  • When in doubt, list a few of the most heavy software you intent to use on this system.

3. Budget

  • How much are you willing to spend?
  • Would you be ready to compromise on storage space first in order to fit your key components into your budget? You can always add a second SSD later, since almost all our laptops have two SSD slots.

4. Portability

  • Will the laptop be mostly stationary, or will you be frequently on-the-go?
  • How much do you mind the weight of a system? Do you have a target weight in kilograms?

5. Screen Size

  • Do you prefer a larger display for immersive experiences, or a smaller one for portability and convenience?

6. Aesthetics

  • Do you prefer a laptop that looks powerful, or rather one that is sleek, business-like and "under-coveru201d?

7. Connectivity

  • Are specific ports required? Are you planning to use a Thunderbolt docking station or an eGPU?
  • Is it important to have a traditional Mini-DisplayPort output? This would relieve you of some potential USB-C/DisplayPort adapter hassle in the future.
  • Do you plan to use the laptop with a wired VR headset in the future?

8. Keyboard

  • Do you require an integrated numpad in your keyboard?
  • Would you prefer your keyboard to be relatively quiet or would you rather have a strong, mechanical keyboard?

9. Other Features

  • Do you need a full-size card reader?
